KARACHI: Consumers of electricity in Karachi may soon enjoy a respite from a high tariff as per unit reduction of Rs 4.95 is expected. K-Electric has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for the reduction in electric prices.
A hearing will take place for K-Electric’s petition about the monthly fuel adjustment for December. If it gets approved the power tariff will be reduced and the consumers will be relieved by Rs 4.94 billion.
The development took root after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last week announced a further reduction in power tariffs for domestic and industrial consumers through reforms in the electricity sector.
The Prime Minister was said to be satisfied with the present changes in the electric sector, terming it a “good result.” He further said that he will commit to guaranteeing the supply of affordable, sustainable energy.
The renegotiation of contracts with the Independent Power Producers was supposed to save the national treasury and lower electricity bills for consumers.
In addition, the Prime Minister pledged to begin an intensive campaign against electricity theft to eliminate losses incurred by distribution companies.
