Will daily fuel prices benefit the public?

US fuel prices surge

ISLAMABAD: The daily determination of the prices of petroleum products by the government will have a direct impact on the common citizen, transport, business and the overall economy.

This system has some potential benefits, but it can also create several challenges. If the prices of petrol and diesel change daily, it will be difficult for the common citizen to accurately estimate his daily and monthly expenses. Employees, taxi and rickshaw drivers, motorcycle users and small business owners will have to change their budget according to the changing prices every day.

When petroleum products become expensive, transporters can immediately demand an increase in fares, while in the event of a decrease in prices, the reduction in fares is usually not immediate, this can put an additional financial burden on passengers and disputes can also arise over the determination of fares, which can also increase the travel expenses of the public.

Most goods are transported by road in Pakistan, so daily fluctuations in the price of diesel can also affect the prices of vegetables, fruits, flour, milk, meat and other essential commodities. It will be difficult for traders to accurately estimate the cost, which may result in price uncertainty.

If the market is left completely free, there may be concerns of hoarding, artificial shortages or profiteering on the expectation of price differences or increases in some places, in which case effective government supervision will be indispensable.

Petrol pump owners argue that daily price changes will affect existing stock, purchase and sale calculations. If the new price makes the old stock expensive or cheap, they may also suffer financial losses, for which a clear procedure is required.

If crude oil prices are low in the global market, the daily pricing system can also provide immediate relief to the public, while in the current system, the benefit of price reduction is sometimes available after several days, in addition, pricing can be more in line with the global market.

The success of the daily pricing system will depend on transparent procedures, effective regulation and strict monitoring. If the government takes the confidence of consumers, petrol pump owners, oil marketing companies and the transport sector and formulates clear rules, then this system can prove effective. Otherwise, continuous fluctuations in prices can lead to inflation, uncertainty and increase in public hardship.

The daily pricing system for petroleum products will be a major policy change, as it will immediately reach the public with the effects of the global market. However, if it is not accompanied by effective monitoring, transparency and consumer protection measures, the common man may have to face a new wave of frequently changing prices, rising fares and inflation.
