Water supply disruptions force closure of Sindh Universities

Water supply suspended in several areas of Karachi

KARACHI: Three prominent universities in Sindh — University of Sindh, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) and Allah Bakhsh Soomro University of Art Design and Heritage — are closed due to water supply disruptions.

Initially closed for winter vacations from December 20, 2024 to January 12, 2025, the universities have extended their closure following water supply disruptions.

The issue arose from maintenance work on Feeder Bay, a canal connected to the Indus River that supplies water to the universities. Irrigation authorities confirmed that the canal works were temporarily halted to facilitate phased restoration work, which is currently underway.

In response to the crisis, Sindh University has shifted to online classes starting January 13, 2025. Similarly, Mehran University Jamshoro is conducting virtual lessons to ensure minimal disruption to the academic progress of students.

Efforts are underway to restore water supply, with irrigation authorities working to complete the restoration as soon as possible. Universities are expected to resume in-person activities once the issue is resolved.
