First Congo virus death of year reported in Karachi

KARACHI: The First case of Congo of the year has been reported in Karachi, as a 42-year-old man in Karachi passed away after being diagnosed a day earlier, according to a statement from the provincial health ministry’s coordinator, Meeran Yousaf.

The deceased was admitted to Indus Hospital in Korangi, where he tested positive for CCHF on June 16, but later died. A team of health experts visited his residence but found the door locked.

Speaking to a media outlet, Yousuf said, “The team assumed that the family took away the body for burial at their native place somewhere.”

According to the WHO, the illness can spread from person to person by direct contact with an infected individual’s blood, saliva, organs, or other body fluids.

With fever, headache, disorientation, neck pain and stiffness, muscular aches, headaches, painful eyes, and light sensitivity, the symptoms appear suddenly.

The first case of the disease in Pakistan was reported in 1976 when a surgeon, along with three healthcare providers, died following an infection from a patient.
