Islamabad tax on bore water

ISLAMABAD: According to a notification issued by the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), citizens of the federal capital now have to pay tax for using bore water, based on the horsepower of the boring motor.

Due to the shortage of water in different areas of the capital Islamabad, people prefer borewells in their homes. No tax was being collected on the acquisition and use of government-owned underground water, but now the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad has imposed a tax to use the underground water through bore.

In this context, according to a notification, now different water charges will be collected from different categories based on the horsepower of the boring motor. The house will be charged 1000 per month if a half-horsepower motor is used and a one-inch pipe is bored.

Rs. 2,500 per month will be charged from houses using underground water through a 2-horsepower motor and 2-inch pipe, and Rs. 4,000 per month from commercial users.

Furthermore, Rs10,000 will be charged to domestic users who use an 8 to 15-horsepower motor and 3-inch pipe to extract underground water through boring and 15 thousand rupees per month from commercial users.

Domestic users who use 15 to 30 horsepower motor and 4-inch pipe will be charged 20,000 rupees while 25,000 rupees will be charged to commercial users.

According to MCI’s notification, domestic users using 40 to 50 horsepower motor and 6-inch pipe will be charged Rs 50,000 per month while commercial users will be charged Rs 75,000 per month.

Domestic users using 70 to 100 horsepower motor and 8-inch pipe will be charged Rs 1 lakh, while commercial customers will be charged Rs 1 lakh 50 thousand per month. For 140 to 160 horsepower motor and 9-inch pipes, Rs 2 lakh for domestic users and Rs 3 lakhs for commercial users per month.
