Whether your heart is set upon a holiday staple like “Elf ” or “Love Actually” or more current fare such as “Last Christmas” or “Holidate”, there is a winter movie for everybody. Curl up under the blanket, get cozy, and let winter shine on the big screen.
The huge film library leaves us spoiled for choice, thus I have compiled a list of some of the 10 Berry-Best Netflix Movies to watch for this winter.
1. The Holiday (2006)
A romantic comedy classic, “The Holiday” tells the tale of two women who will house-swap over the holidays and find love along the way. Featuring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black, this is a winter treat for the heart.
Thus, the unfolding tale of two ladies in deep despair unfolds at the hands of Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet), both fighting off their loneliness on the Christmas season. Amanda is a movie trailer editor in Los Angeles who has just found out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her, while Iris is a columnist at Surrey, England, pining for a man who does not love her at all.
These two set up to meet online and swap homes for the holidays. Amanda will move to Iris’s little cottage in England, while Iris will take in Amanda’s plush abode in L.A.
Together, Amanda and Iris start journeying toward love and healing in ways they never expected. Amanda falls in love with Graham (Jude Law), Iris’s brother, and Iris finds herself falling for Miles (Jack Black), a film composer who is a bit wary about committing to a serious relationship at first.
2. Love Hard (2021)
A Netflix original romantic comedy, “Love Hard” is about Natalie Bauer (Nina Dobrev), a marketing professional who works in Los Angeles and is desperate in love. After too many bad relationships and disappointing dates, Natalie decides it is time to give it a try on the dating app.
She matches with Josh Lin (Jimmy O. Yang), an attractive and charming fellow from Lake Placid, New York. They hit it off instantly, bonding over their equal affection for Christmas and rom-coms.
Convinced she has met her perfect match, Natalie takes a gamble and heads to Lake Placid to surprise Josh for Christmas. But she gets another thing entirely! Once in Lake Placid, Natalie discovers that Josh is not at all who he said he was.
3. The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Here’s a fun Christmas movie taking you on a festive and adventurous ride: “The Christmas Chronicles” centers around two siblings, Teddy (Judah Lewis) and Kate (Darby Camp), coping with the death of their father while staying at home alone during an unexpected snowstorm on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas Eve, while trying to make the best of it, they meet a strange jolly old man who claims to be the real Santa Claus (Kurt Russell). Along with Santa, the siblings help him to save Christmas, leading to an adventure full of action, humor, and spirit.
4. The Princess Switch (2018)
A romantic comedy by Netflix to house-swap during Christmas time, “The Princess Switch” follows both the aspirant baker Stacy DeNovo (Vanessa Hudgens) from Chicago and the baking competition taking place on Belgravia, an imaginary European Kingdom.
Upon arriving, Stacy meets Lady Margaret Delacourt (also played by Vanessa Hudgens), the Duchess of Montenaro, engaged to dashing Prince Edward (Sam Palladio). And as they spend time together, Stacey and Margaret, by virtue of their similarity of looks, join hands to switch.
As Stacy learns to navigate royal life, Prince Edward’s attention is captured while Margaret relishes being common. But it’s getting complicated mainly because Stacy is beginning to fall for Edward while Margaret is gradually developing feelings for Stacy’s friend, Kevin (Nick Sagar).
5. Elf (2003)
In this Christmas classic, “Elf,” an orphan boy raised by elves goes to New York to find his birth father. Starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, and Zooey Deschanel, this film combines winter fun and humor into one heartwarming experience.
The movie tells the story of Buddy Hobbs, a human who was accidentally taken to the North Pole as a child and raised by elves of Santa. Learning about his non-elf status, he sets off to New York City to locate his biological father, Walter Hobbs.
However, Buddy’s innocence and childlike idea clashes with the cynicism and stress of the big city. He falls in love with a department store employee, Jovie, and helps his father rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.
6. The Night Before (2015)
A stoner-comedy classic, “The Night Before” follows three friends on a wild adventure in New York City the night before Christmas. It stars Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and it’s such a cheery and fun watch during winter.
The film tells about three children friends, Ethan, Isaac, and Chris, who have carried on with each other since childhood. Each year they celebrate and spend Christmas Eve together, getting high and going on adventures more mischievous than the last.
But as grown, their lives have advanced in different directions. Ethan grieves the death of his parents, Isaac is about to become a father, and Chris is a famous football player. It may be the last Christmas Eve they celebrate together, so they’ve decided to make it quite unforgettable.
The friends get into a series of comic misadventures, including a search for the ultimate party, beat-up guy jocks, and a mysterious woman who becomes the object of Ethan’s affection.
7. A Christmas Prince (2017)
This Netflix original romantic comedy tells the story of a journalist who goes undercover at a royal palace and falls for the prince. Starring Rose McIver and Ben Lamb, this film has a fun, festive, and seasonal feel.
Christmas Prince is a 2017 American Christmas romantic comedy film directed by Alex Zamm. This film stars Rose McIver as Amber Moore, an aspiring journalist, and Ben Lamb as Prince Richard, the prince of Aldovia.¹
Set at Christmastime, the plot follows Amber, a budding journalist who pretends to be a private tutor to get a juicy story on the prince. Inevitably, though, she falls for him and learns the meaning of Christmas.
It was released via Netflix on November 17, 2017, and received generally positive reviews from critics, including a 73 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
8. The Family Stone (2005)
A dramedy classic, “The Family Stone” tells the story of a man meeting his girlfriend’s quirky family during the Christmas holiday celebrations. Starring Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rachel McAdams, it’s a warm and funny winter treat.
The plot follows the premise of the Stone family. They are odd but moderately close-knit, meeting up for the holiday. It consists of Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson), their five children: Everett (Dermot Mulroney), Amy (Rachel McAdams), Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser), Thad (Ty Giordano), and Kay (Sarah Jessica Parker).
It is on this novel that the plot hangs: Everett comes home with new girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker), a stolidly conservative and tight woman. As the family settles in for the holiday, tensions flare, secrets are divulged, and, as a result, there are many genuine and comical moments.
9. Last Christmas (2019)
A romantic comedy classic, “Last Christmas” tells of a woman who learns to love again after encountering a stranger who helps her rediscover the spirit of Christmas. Starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, this film is a fabulous and festive winter watch.
The movie follows a journey of Kate, a down-on-her-luck Christmas store worker who has an involvement with the elusive man, Tom. With time spent and thrills gained in close proximity, Kate starts falling for Tom, but their relationship is drawn into peril when Kate discovers a really enormous shock about Tom’s past. Britain was battling against the elements on Christmas day. One predictably cold day at Christmas, she finds a chance job at a shop with a crass owner, providing Christmas security blah blah. There she has mixed relations with her coworkers.
The score of the film contains music by George Michael and Wham!, including the mega-hit single “Last Christmas.” The movie’s soundtrack also includes a previously unreleased song by George Michael, “This Is How (We Want You to Get High).”
10. Holidate (2020)
This Netflix original romantic comedy is about two people who are tired of being single on holidays and therefore agree to be each other’s platonic dates for a year. Starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey, the film has a fun, comedic feel in winter.
The film narrates the tale of Sloane and Jackson, two tired of being single during the holiday season. They meet on a plane and undergo a series of awkward encounters, which results in an agreement to be each other’s platonic dates for a year, attending every major holiday together.
Sloane and Jackson begin to develop feelings for one another as they spend time together, but it becomes difficult for them to admit it. The movie takes viewers through different holidays: Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween, as Sloane and Jackson figure out their feelings and whether they should be together.
