ISLAMABAD: The federal government is planning to launch a winter package for electricity consumers to increase electricity consumption to avoid losses in the sector.
Reports said that the government is considering reducing the price of electricity by Rs 8 per unit for three months (December 2024 to February 2025) for all consumers. However, the relief in electricity charges will be extended only after approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Finance Minister, Power Division and other concerned departments are working together to finalize the winter package.
The authorities are currently considering two packages for consumers. First, the price of electricity will be reduced to Rs 8 per unit for all consumers. Second, relief will be provided only to industries for increased power consumption.
If the package is extended to the industrial sector only, the price per unit is likely to come down by Rs 20.
Reports say that discussions have taken place between Finance Ministry officials and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the proposed package. A formal report has also been submitted in response to questions raised by IMF officials.
