Govt announces public holiday on May 28 for Youm-e-Takbeer

UAE announces public holiday for 1st Muharram, 3-Day weekend ahead

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Tuesday declared a public holiday on May 28, 2025, to mark the Youm-e-Takbeer, the day when Pakistan conducted a series of nuclear tests in 1998.

The notification, issued by the Establishment Division, stated that all government institutions will remain closed on May 28 (Wednesday).

A day earlier, the Sindh government also announced a holiday on May 28 on account of the Youm-e-Takbeer.

“All provincial government offices, including local councils and municipal bodies, will remain closed on that day,” the notification read.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has also announced that a holiday will be observed on May 28.

PSX chief market operations has issued the notification stating that no business activity will be carried out on Wednesday due to the holiday.

Youm-e-Takbeer is observed every year in commemoration of the Chagai-I and Chagai-II series of nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, that made the defense of the country invincible.

The day made Pakistan the seventh nuclear nation of the world and the first Muslim state to have a nuclear arsenal.
