Govt forms special ‘security cells’ for foreigners’ protection

Five police personnel injured in North Waziristan attack

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has devised a “comprehensive” security framework to ensure the protection of foreign nationals in Pakistan after the recent attacks against foreigners, particularly Chinese.

According to the details, the government has decided to establish separate foreigner security cells at federal, provincial, and district levels.

Foreigner security cells will be formed in each of the four provinces, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. A Federal Foreign National Security Cell at the federal level will operate under the Ministry of Interior.

District Foreigners Security Cells will also be set up in each district nationwide.

Furthermore, the police, the Special Police Units (SPU), and the Special Security Unit (SSU) will perform security duties while the armed forces will also be called upon for the security of high-ranking foreign dignitaries.

As per the draft document, the Tourism Department will be responsible for the security arrangements for tourists, foreign journalists, students, athletes, and religious pilgrims.

Furthermore, government institutions sponsoring foreign nationals will appoint focal persons for security arrangements.
