Karachi becomes winter heaven for Siberian birds attracting thousands of tourist

KARACHI: Karachi is often referred to as the land of migrants, a seasonal escape for Siberian birds escaping the harsh winters of their land. Every year, these migrating birds travel thousands of kilometers through Kazakhstan and spend the winter season from October to February along Karachi’s coastal belt in search of food.

During this time, many species including waterfowl, pelicans, cranes, and others adorn the shores with their colorful presence.

Viewing the birds is a treat for the eyes and has made them a natural attraction for local residents and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Deputy Conservator Mumtaz Soomro underscored the importance of these migratory birds, and the role they play in displaying nature’s splendor.

The citizens who have an affinity for the sea have expressed how enthralled they are by the sight of these winged visitors that can fly for as long as 10 months. The birds’ annual visit has become such an event in the calendar, representing some of the city’s uniqueness as a haven for migratory species.

As the birds begin to prepare for their final flight back to Siberia by February, they will soar away with sweet memories and promises for next season.

Once again Karachi’s coastal belt will be devoid of type species, but memories left will linger and the locals will get more eager to see them back. The migratory visit is a reminder of the splendor and gorgeousness of nature and Karachi has endowed itself to be a part of this scenic journey annually.
