KARACHI: In a recent development, Water supply to Karachi from the Dhabeji Pumping Station has been restored after a power breakdown earlier this morning, a K-electric spokesperson said.
Water supply to various areas of the city was suspended on Monday morning after a power breakdown caused two main water supply lines to burst.
It quoted the KWSC spokesperson as explaining that “the high pressure due to power breakdown caused damages in 72-inch Line No 1 and Line No 5, which in turn reduced 100 MGD water supply to the metropolis”.
This has affected parts of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shah Faisal Colony, PECHS, Sindhi Muslim Society, and the Old City. The Chief Engineer has informed that emergency repairs are in process and Line No. 5 will be restored within the next 24 hours.
The spokesperson of KWSC asked the citizens to save water as efforts were being made to restore electricity at the pumping stations and resume water supply. Because of disrupted water supply, about 80 to 90 percent of Karachi is expected to face a shortage of water.
The K-electric spokesperson said water supply to several areas was resumed temporarily, restored from Dhabeji pumping station, while all main pumps were functional, but efforts to remove the fault at the site were a continuous process, monitoring the situation for improvement.
The breakdown of power at Dhabeji Pumping Station has brought the water supply mechanism to a grinding halt, and restoration work is underway to restore the same as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the citizens have been advised to take necessary precautions and conserve water in view of this shortage.
