PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has proposed an amendment to the Universities Amendment Bill 2024, transferring the powers of the university chancellor from the governor to the chief minister.
Under the proposed legislation, the chief minister — currently Ali Amin Gandapur in office — will hold the authority to appoint vice-chancellors.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities (Amendment) Bill 2024 was presented in the provincial assembly by Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan, replacing the governor with the chief minister as the chancellor of all public sector universities in the province.
According to the bill draft, vice-chancellors will serve a four-year term, subject to a mid-term performance review by a government-formed evaluation committee.
“For women’s public universities in the province, only female candidates will be eligible for the vice-chancellor positions.”
The bill amends the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act 2012, introducing administrative changes and transferring the authority to appoint vice-chancellors to the chief minister.
