Millions worth of solar panels stolen from govt schools in Punjab

Solar buyers hit by price hike before budget day

ISLAMABAD: An audit report presented in the Punjab Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee-III has revealed that solar panels worth over Rs 6.5 million were stolen from 50 schools in Rajanpur district during 2022-23.

The committee expressed serious concern over the incidents and directed that police investigations be conducted across the province, warning that similar thefts could occur in other districts as well.

Committee member Tanveer Aslam Malik stressed that strict instructions be issued to district police officers in the affected areas.

He further stressed that comprehensive records of the targeted schools and clarification should be made as to whether any stolen panels were recovered.

Education department officials confirmed that police cases have been registered in connection with the thefts.

However, the audit department pointed out that local education authorities have failed to ensure the safety of solar panels.
