NDMA issues flood warning for Guddu, Sukkur barrages

Flash flood warning issued for Gilgit Baltistan, KP

SUKKUR: A flood warning has been raised for the Guddu and Sukkur barrages, given the spillway opening at Tarbela Dam and persistent monsoon rains. Heavy rains are pounding some areas of Pakistan during the monsoon season, causing flash floods in the north

There is a chance of low to moderate-grade flooding at the barrages within the next week, according to officials. Irrigation officials have ordered the prompt repair and ongoing monitoring of weak embankments to avoid possible damage.

Although there is yet no direct danger to residential areas in riverine (Katcha) areas, officials have warned that crops in low-lying areas that are already standing can be underwater due to the heightening water level.

Relevant departments have been ordered to stay on standby for any emergency action. Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had sounded an alert before the anticipated new monsoon spell in various regions of the nation, beginning on Sunday (today).

The NDMAs National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) called upon people to remain cautious as heavy showers, thunderstorms, and possible flash flooding are expected to hit different regions of the nation from July 6 to 10 during the new monsoon spell.

Impacts-based weather warnings issued by NEOC indicated that forecast monsoon activity and a robust westerly wave can impact several parts of the nation between July 6 and 10, whereas northern regions have a high risk of flash floods between July 7 and 12.
