Imran Khan indicted in GHQ attack case

RAWALPINDI: Police have taken senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Omar Ayub and Raja Basharat into custody from outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Thursday after both politicians were indicted in a GHQ attack case.

During the hearing today at a makeshift court set up in Adiala Jail, the anti-terrorism court (ATC) Judge Amjad Ali Shah indicted PTI founder Imran Khan and a total of 100 people in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case related to the May 9 protests that happened last year.

Following the court’s decision, the opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, former Punjab’s law minister Raja Basharat, MNA Ahmed Ali Chattha, and Azim-ud-Din were arrested.

PTI lawyer Rana Mudassar confirmed to the reporters that Ayub and Basharat were arrested by policemen at Adiala Jail’s check post.

Over 143 individuals, including Khan, were named as accused in the case, while 23, including Zulfi Bukhari, Shahbaz Gill, and Murad Saeed, have already been declared proclaimed offenders. Additionally, all accused have been prohibited from travelling abroad.

Following the indictment, the court adjourned the case until December 10 for recording the evidence of the prosecution.

At least 70 PTI leaders were accused of planning the May 9 events and inciting the workers and supporters to attack military and government installations following the arrest of the ousted prime minister by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
