ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has come under scrutiny after he made a tweet on his social media platform X, congratulating the Pakistan Hockey Team.
The PM, who has a reputation for tweeting in several languages, welcomed the team to their semi-final victory against France in the FIH Nations Cup. “Heartfelt congratulations to the national hockey team for reaching the final of the Nations Cup.
Pakistani team turned the tide of the match with courage, skill, and determination—this is a proud moment for the entire nation. Pakistan Zindabad!” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
However, the social media users started an online debate, stating that the fact that the tweet contains an em dash (—) means it is AI-generated.
Some people came to the defense of the PM. “The em dash has been around in English much longer than AI—this is a no–brainer,” one of the users posted. Another observed, “Even if it was composed with AI, what is the harm? People use calculators and spellcheck, too.”
Around the world, AI tool usage in political communications has drawn protest, as analysts start recognizing patterns associated with machine writing. Others dismissed the outrage. “People use ChatGPT to compose entire theses. This was a tweet,” one critic had said.
Up to now, the PM’s office has not responded to whether the tweet was generated using an AI tool or not.
