Questions raised over government’s austerity campaign

PM Shehbaz to address nation shortly

ISLAMABAD: Questions have been raised over the government’s austerity campaign as plans emerge to spend millions of rupees on the renovation and maintenance of Parliament Lodges.

As per the details, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has issued a tender worth millions of rupees for the renovation and maintenance of Parliament Lodges. According to details, significant funds are expected to be spent on the repair and upkeep of 36 parliamentarians’ suites.

The CDA has invited bids until April 14 for the renovation of suites belonging to key members of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, under the government’s austerity drive, deductions in the salaries of government employees are reportedly continuing. Sources claim that the Accountant General Pakistan Revenues (AGPR) has deducted up to 30 percent from government employees’ salaries ahead of Eid.

Sources further say that the Ministry of Finance has instructed AGPR to suspend payments of all government bills except salaries until further notice.

In addition, AGPR has reportedly halted the clearance of cheques for government employees and vendors, raising concerns among stakeholders.
