US Student Visa Update: Social media IDs now part of application process

US tightens Green Card rules for foreign visa holders

ISLAMABAD: The U.S. Department of State has updated its requirements for student visa applications, including the provision of social media identifiers, a policy that started in 2019.

According to the social media post published on the US Embassy Islamabad’s official X (Twitter) account, to apply for a U.S. student visa,  students will now need to gather several documents. First, ensure you have a valid passport that’s valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.

You’ll also need a Form I-20, issued by your U.S. school after SEVIS registration, and a SEVIS fee payment receipt, which requires a $350 payment, the notification stated.

Additionally, potential students need to complete the online nonimmigrant visa application form, known as the DS-160, and receive a confirmation page with a barcode.

A visa application fee receipt is also required, which involves a $160 payment. Furthermore, you’ll need a passport-sized photo that meets U.S. visa photo requirements and proof of financial support, such as bank statements, affidavits of support, or scholarship details.

To schedule a visa interview, students need to follow a few steps. First, get accepted into a U.S. institution and receive a Form I-20. Then, pay the SEVIS fee and complete the DS-160 form.

Interview Scheduling

After that, you can schedule a visa interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate. It’s essential to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, including English proficiency, full-time enrollment in an approved program, and compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitors Program regulations.

Before applying, review the latest guidance on the U.S. Department of State’s official website or consult with your U.S. school’s international student office to ensure you’re following current protocols.

This will help you navigate the application process smoothly and avoid any potential issues. By being prepared and meeting the requirements, you can increase your chances of a successful visa application and start your academic journey in the U.S.
