WhatsApp services disrupted in Pakistan ahead of PTI gathering

LAHORE: WhatsApp users in Pakistan, particularly in Lahore and Islamabad, experienced disruptions on Sunday, with difficulties in sharing files, especially pictures and videos.

The outage occurred as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepared for a political gathering in Islamabad, where entry and exit points were blocked.

The disruptions affected mobile data users, while those connected to broadband services remained unaffected. Other social media platforms, such as YouTube, continued to function normally.

This incident is the latest in a series of internet connectivity issues in Pakistan, which have persisted for approximately two months.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) attributes the problems to cable faults and expects repairs to be completed by early October.

However, conflicting explanations have emerged, with some officials suggesting increased VPN use or a government-imposed firewall might be contributing factors.
