ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked more than 5.8 million inactive SIMs across the country, here on Wednesday.
A statement issued by the PTA said that a crackdown was carried out against illegal SIMs during the financial year 2023-24, during which more than 5.8 million inactive SIMs were blocked across the country.
The PTA said that 40 raids were conducted in different cities of the country against illegal SIMs. These raids were carried out in Kasur, Kharian, Sialkot, Lahore, Peshawar, Puno Aqil, Kashmore, Sukkur, Sheikhupura, Sharqpur Sharif, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sahiwal, Hassan Abdal.
According to the PTA, 7,500 SIMs and 152 biometric verification system devices were seized in these raids.
The PTA also arrested 47 suspects during the operations.
The PTA says that inactive SIMs were blocked due to the fear of being used in terrorism.
