KARACHI: There have been reports of WhatsApp accounts being hacked in Pakistan and incidents of fraud and blackmailing through it.
According to a private TV report, WhatsApp hacking incidents have increased in recent times. Therefore, cyber security experts have instructed users to be extremely careful in sharing verification codes (OTPs).
Hackers targeting social media and mobile users are hacking WhatsApp of citizens by calling from unknown numbers.
According to sources, hackers pretend to be representatives of a courier company and convince the victim that a parcel has arrived in his name, for the delivery of which a code received on the mobile is required.
Experts say that as soon as the user is deceived and shares this one-time password (OTP), his WhatsApp account immediately goes under the control of the hacker.
The hackers then send messages to all the victim’s numbers, claiming emergency, demanding money, causing financial losses to many.
According to reports, elderly people and housewives are more likely to fall victim to this fraud, as they are less tech-savvy.
One victim said that messages were sent to thousands of acquaintances on his WhatsApp and dozens of people also transferred money in his name.
Cybersecurity experts have warned citizens not to share OTPs or personal information with any unknown caller. Officials say that creating awareness among the public is essential to prevent such crimes.
