ISLAMABAD: The popular messaging application WhatsApp has announced the introduction of a new username feature for user privacy.
According to the details released by WhatsApp, now users will not need to share their phone number to contact their family, friends or anyone else through the app.
According to the report, with the help of WhatsApp’s new username feature, users will now be able to choose a unique username to keep their phone number safe.
Meta has explained that restricting access to phone numbers will mean that in cases such as joining a WhatsApp group or messaging a person or organization for the first time, no user’s number will be automatically shared with other users.
The statement further states that once you choose a username with the help of the username feature, then anyone who wants to contact you on WhatsApp must know your correct username.
Meta has informed users that there are about 3 billion WhatsApp users worldwide, so it is possible that users may not get the username of their choice.
The statement further stated that the names of celebrities and high-ranking government officials will not be available to general users to prevent forgery and fraud.
Creators, small businesses and institutions will also be able to benefit from this feature as they will be able to use their usernames from other platforms such as Instagram and Facebook on WhatsApp.
