PMD predicts snowfall as winter begins in Pakistan

Weather Update: Intense cold hits following rain, snowfall

GILGIT BALTISTAN: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast a fresh spell of rain and snowfall in the upper parts of the country this week, starting from November 4.

Strong winds and a marked fall in temperatures are likely as the system advances.

The PMD also said that a fresh westerly wind system will reach the upper parts of Pakistan on Sunday night. According to the officials, during November 4 to 5, this system would bring about widespread rainfall together with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and snowfall in northern areas.

Rain and snow are forecasted in many areas.

Met Office said that during the two-day spell, rain is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, and Haripur.

Besides this, rain and snowfall are expected over Swabi, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Kashmir, and Muzaffarabad as the cold air masses are intensifying over the sub-continent.

According to the weather forecast, cloudy weather is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Jhelum, and Sargodha, with thunderstorms in Khushab, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, and Lahore. Moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas may lead to temporary disruption to daily activities, warned the PMD.

The Meteorological Department said the spell of rain was likely to be followed by a considerable drop in the mercury. Wet conditions are also expected to provide short-term respite from smog and fog, especially in Punjab and upper Sindh, where air quality has worsened over the last couple of weeks.
