Weather update: PMD forecasts heavy rain in Karachi

Flood risk in major cities as NDMA warns of severe weather

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced that a shallow westerly weather system will deliver rain together with strong winds, which create dust storms in various regions of Sindh, including Karachi, on February 17.

The Met Office forecast rain, wind, and thunderstorms in various regions of the country from February 16 to 17. Isolated hailstorms are expected to happen during the same period in northern Balochistan, Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab.

Balochistan will experience light to moderate rain, together with strong winds and thunderstorms from the evening of February 16 through February 17.

The storm system will bring rain to Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Chaghi, Nokkundi, Dalbandin, Noshki, Harnai, Zhob, Kalat, Mastung, Barkhan, Sibi, Loralai, Khuzdar, Kech, Turbat, Panjgur, Gwadar, Awaran, Kharan, Pasni, Ormara, and Lasbela.

The Sindh region will experience rain together with strong winds, which will affect Dadu Hyderabad, Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Khairpur on February 17.

The southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, which include Waziristan, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Kurram, will experience light to moderate rain together with thunderstorms during the same period. The department advised farmers to protect standing crops and urged the public to exercise caution during dust storms and heavy showers.
