SYDENY: Susan Coyle has been appointed as the first-ever female chief of the Australian Army, marking a historic milestone in the country’s military leadership.
According to an official statement by the Australian government, Lieutenant General Coyle began her career in 1987 by enlisting in the Army Reserves and has since held a wide range of command and leadership roles across tactical, operational and strategic levels.
Her key appointments include Head Information Warfare, Commander Forces Command, Commander Joint Task Force 633, Commander 6th Brigade, Commander Task Group Afghanistan and Commanding Officer of the 17th Signal Regiment.
The government also paid tribute to the outgoing Army chief, Simon Stuart, praising his distinguished service and leadership, particularly his role in preparing the force under the 2024 National Defence Strategy.
In a broader military reshuffle, Mark Hammond, currently Chief of Navy, has been appointed as the new Chief of the Defence Force. With a career spanning over four decades, Hammond has served extensively in naval operations, including commanding submarines and the Australian Fleet.
He is expected to play a key role in advancing Australia’s defence capabilities, including the acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS pact.
Meanwhile, Matthew Buckley will be promoted to serve as the new Chief of Navy.
The appointments reflect a significant transition in Australia’s top military leadership, with a focus on modernization and strategic readiness.
