DHAKA: Ex-Bangladesh Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina and several high-ranking officials of her administration have been charged with murder after a civilian was killed during protests in Dhaka.

As per the details, the charges follow a tragic incident on July 19, when police opened fire on protesters, killing a bystander.

According to Bangladeshi media, Sheikh Hasina and 6 others were named in the case, which was filed by Amir Hamza, a relative of the victim. The complaint alleges that during the student protest, police opened fire, and one shot hit Abu Saeed, a civilian passing by, killing him.

Apart from Sheikh Hasina, Awami League general secretary, former interior minister, former chief of police, former head of an investigation agency and several unidentified police officers are also accused in these charges.

Background of the incident

The case follows a period of intense unrest in Bangladesh, where more than 300 people were killed in student protests. Under mounting pressure, Sheikh Hasina recently resigned and fled to India. After his departure, the country’s military chief took over and Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the head of the interim government.
