Israeli PM praises Trump, supports hardline Iran talks

Iran strikes Netanyahu’s office & US bases in major missile attacks

WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran now understands the seriousness of the situation after he met with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

Talking to reporters before leaving for Israel, Netanyahu said their discussion mainly focused on Iran and regional security. He said the current situation could create a chance for a new agreement with Tehran.

“Iran may realize it made a mistake earlier by not reaching a deal,” he said, while also calling Trump a “tremendous friend”.

However, Netanyahu said he is still doubtful about any final agreement. He added that if a deal is made, it must not only cover Iran’s nuclear programme but also its ballistic missiles and regional groups.

Trump has earlier said he prefers diplomacy but warned that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, adding that the US maintains a strong military presence in the region.

The latest round of US-Iran talks ended last week in Oman without any major breakthrough, although Iran described the discussions as positive.

Netanyahu’s visit to Washington also came during the 47th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
