Kenya flooding: Around 50 killed in villages near Mai Mahiu town

Kenya flooding

NAIROBI: About 50 people have died in Kenya in a deluge following heavy rains and flooding, a Red Cross official has said.

As they slept, residents of villages close to Mai Mahiu, which is roughly 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Nairobi, were washed away.

People are still being pulled out of the muck by rescue workers, but there are worries that the death toll may go up.

In the past month, floods that devastated regions of Kenya have claimed the lives of over 100 people.

A wide brown scar of mud uprooted trees, and crushed houses slice through the area of Mai Mahiu.

Early on Monday morning, a surge of water poured down from upriver, waking residents with a roar. Residents spoke of a night of frantic efforts to pull people out of the raging flood and dig them out of the mud.
