NDMA issues urban flooding alert for Islamabad

Weather update: Heavy rains expected across Pakistan in 12-48 hours

ISLAMABAD: The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday issued an urban flood alert for Islamabad and parts of northern Punjab, warning of heavy rains, thunderstorms and lightning in the next two to six hours.

According to the NEOC, the areas at risk include Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum and adjoining areas.

The alert said that the formation of high cumulus clouds due to heat may lead to heavy rains, accompanied by lightning and thunder. Landslides are also expected in hilly areas.

The authority warned that the torrential rains could damage vulnerable infrastructure, disrupt power supply and increase the risk of urban flooding.

Citizens were urged to take precautions, stay away from trees and fragile structures, park vehicles in safe locations, and avoid unnecessary travel.
