TEHRAN: The Iranian government has declared a public holiday in the capital, Tehran, on Monday, July 6.
According to government spokeswoman Fatima Mohajrani, the decision was made to facilitate the transportation and return of millions of mourners attending the condolence ceremonies.
According to the government statement, a day of mourning will be observed across the country on Thursday, while various condolence gatherings, prayer ceremonies and other religious programs will be held in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad from July 4 to July 8.
A large number of citizens are expected to participate in these ceremonies from different parts of the country.
The Iranian government says that the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be held in Mashhad on July 8, where millions of mourners are expected to arrive. In this context, security, traffic and public facilities arrangements are also being finalized so that the participants do not face any difficulties.
Government spokesperson Fatima Mohajrani further said that the condolence ceremonies will not be limited to Iran alone, but special gatherings and prayer gatherings will also be held in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, as well as in Kazmin, Karbala and Najaf.
According to the authorities, the main purpose of declaring a public holiday is to provide safe and easy travel facilities to citizens, reduce traffic pressure and run administrative affairs effectively during the condolence ceremonies.
The government has appealed to the public to follow the instructions of the relevant institutions and take precautionary measures while traveling.
