RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has taken a major step towards sustainable transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered bus. The trial service, inaugurated by Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr, Governor of Al-Ahsa, demonstrates the kingdom’s commitment to environmentally friendly and innovative transportation solutions.
The hydrogen-powered bus can travel up to 635 kilometers on a full tank and can accommodate 45 passengers. It will cover 359 kilometers between Dammam and Al-Ahsa daily. SAT Company operates the service in the Southern Concession Area as part of Intercity Transportation Services.
During the inauguration, an introductory video highlighted the bus’s features, including its fueling process, safety measures and environmental benefits. Prince Saud participated in the test run to demonstrate the bus’s performance, along with other dignitaries such as Dr. Rumeeh bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, Acting Chairman of the General Transport Authority.
The initiative is in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on improving the quality of life and promoting sustainable technologies. Prince Saud stressed Al-Ahsa’s important role in improving transportation and adopting innovative solutions that reduce carbon emissions. Dr. Rumeeh said that the trial reflects the General Transport Authority’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies and promoting sustainable practices. These efforts aim to reduce carbon emissions and improve Saudi Arabia’s competitiveness in the regional and global transportation sectors, in line with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.
