Beginning February 25, 2026, visitors from 85 countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and France, will be obligated to have an Electronic Travel Authorization before entering the United Kingdom.
It follows confirmation from the UK government that all visitors to the UK who do not require a visa will need an electronic travel permit. Airlines and travel operators will need to check a valid ETA before passengers board.
What Is The UK ETA?
The UK ETA works just like the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA, permitting visits for tourism, business, or transit for short-term entry into the country without a long-documented visa. More than 13 million travellers have applied since its introduction in October 2023. According to the Home Office, the system increases security at the border while easing entry for legitimate travellers.
Why the ETA is Being Implemented
According to UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp, the ETA provides the authorities with increased powers in terms of ensuring only legitimate entries are allowed into the country.
Digital checks prevent any potential risks while making the immigration process smoother for permissible travelers.
How to get a UK ETA Application

- Fee: £16 per applicant.
- Processing: Most applicants are approved instantly; it is suggested that travellers apply at least three days in advance in case further checks are required.
