Maersk agrees to invest $2b

KARACHI: Danish shipping company Maersk has agreed to invest two billion dollars in Pakistan’s port and transport infrastructure over the next two years due to the efforts of the Special Investment Facilitation Council, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said in a statement.

The investment in this project will contribute to infrastructure development and economic improvement, it added.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh will visit Denmark this month for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Maersk Shipping Company and Karachi Port Trust.

In a statement, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh said  Karachi has great potential to increase exports and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs is providing an enabling environment to the business community in this regard.

Earlier this month, Sheikh revealed that Maersk will begin its investment in October 2024, focusing on areas such as infrastructure, terminals, warehousing, and shipbreaking, aiming to transform Karachi into a major transshipment hub.
