ISLAMABAD: The Power Division’s sustained efforts to strengthen competition have resulted in a 40 percent reduction in the prices of smart electricity meters, a move expected to generate Rs150 billion in savings at the national level.
According to Power Minister Owais Laghari, the price of three-phase smart meters has been reduced from Rs45,000 to Rs25,000, while the cost of single-phase meters has dropped by Rs7,000.
The reduction follows positive regulatory changes introduced by the government through the Pakistan Engineering Council, which helped remove procedural hurdles and encouraged greater participation by international companies.
Power Minister Owais Laghari said that lower meter prices will directly benefit electricity consumers, as they will now pay less in the form of demand notices.
He added that smart meters will help immediately detect incorrect meter readings and electricity theft, improving transparency and efficiency in the power sector.
He further stated that smart meters will offer advanced payment options, live monitoring facilities, and real-time access to electricity consumption data.
Additional benefits include faster power restoration without line mains and improved system management, making smart meters a key step toward a more reliable and consumer-friendly electricity network.
