Will Schools, colleges remain closed amid floods?

LAHORE: The Punjab Education Department has made a notification giving deputy commissioners in the province the power to make a decision on closing schools in flood-hit areas.

Deputy commissioners would be able to declare school holidays for their areas on the basis of the local flood situation, the notification said.

In Kot Momin tehsil of Sargodha, schools have already been closed for seven days due the flooding, with schools to stay shut until September 2.

In addition, colleges in some of the flooded areas in Lahore division are also closed. There were 16 holiday announcements made by the Director of Colleges. In Nankana Sahib, institutions in Mandi Faizabad and Syedwala will be closed for two days, whereas in Kasur, colleges in Kanganpur will also be on holiday.

In a related announcement, Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) Chairman Muhammad Abdul Aziz led a major meeting in which it was resolved to suspend all written tests planned for August 30 and 31 owing to the prevailing state of flood emergency.

The provincial administration highlighted that the steps were taken in order to provide safety and to hold a place for displaced families who are using schools as shelters.
