CM Sindh orders investigation into underage marriages in Dadu district

CM Murad orders inquiry for child marriage

KARACHI: Sindh’s Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has called for a report from the Commissioner of Hyderabad concerning the underage marriages of 45 girls in Khan Mohammad Mallah village, Dadu district.

The Chief Minister took action following media reports about the spike in child marriages in the village since the 2022 floods, which severely affected the region. He has directed the Hyderabad Commissioner to investigate and report on the situation.

In response to the troubling reports, CM Shah has also ordered the formation of a committee to examine the social, economic, and legal aspects of these child marriages.

Moreover, he has requested information on whether the affected girls are from flood-hit families and how much relief was provided to them.

Many villages in Sindh’s agricultural belt have yet to recover from the 2022 floods, which displaced millions and devastated crops. The Chief Minister has asked the Commissioner to provide findings and recommendations on the issue.

Child marriage remains prevalent in several parts of Pakistan, which has the sixth-highest rate of girls married before age 18 globally, according to December data.
