LAHORE: In view of the growing energy crisis, the Punjab government has started considering developing a new policy based on thrift, under which important measures have been proposed to limit energy consumption across the province and ensure effective use of resources.
According to sources, the Energy Department has submitted several recommendations to the Punjab government, including a proposal to introduce a fuel rationing system on the lines of the federal government.
Under this system, a coupon or digital system can be implemented for fair distribution of petrol and diesel to control fuel consumption.
Sources say that holidays have been recommended in educational institutions till April 15, while introducing a hybrid education system (online and physical classes) in schools is also being considered to reduce energy consumption.
Furthermore, a proposal to provide fuel to limited vehicles on specific days is also under consideration, through which an attempt will be made to reduce unnecessary travel.
Similarly, strict implementation of the work-from-home policy has been recommended for private institutions to reduce electricity and fuel consumption in offices.
According to sources, measures such as a complete ban on non-essential events, increasing metro and bus services, and encouraging the public to use public transport are also part of this policy. In addition, it has been proposed to switch off LED billboards and decorative lights while operating street lights on alternate mode after 10 pm.
Moreover, further restriction of the working hours of markets is also being considered to prevent energy waste. Officials say that all these proposals are aimed at overcoming the current energy crisis and ensuring better use of resources in the province.
