Donkey slaughterhouse established in Gwadar, production underway

Pakistan’s donkey count rises by 100,000 in a year

GWADAR: In a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Food Security, officials from the Ministry of Food Security revealed that a donkey slaughterhouse has been set up in the city of Gwadar in Balochistan and has started functioning.

Ministry officials said that an agreement has been signed with China to export donkey skin and bones. A Chinese company will be responsible for the operation in Gwadar.

Committee members questioned why live donkeys are not being exported to China. Ministry officials explained that exporting live animals is more complicated.

They added that the ministry is receiving requests for setting up similar slaughterhouses in other parts of the country and is currently in talks with other Chinese companies regarding possible partnerships.

A member of the committee, Rana Muhammad Hayat, noted the increasing use of motor vehicles as the reason for the decline in donkey use in Pakistan and advocated breeding programs to improve the quality of the donkey population.
