ECP restores Murad Saeed’s Senate membership, suspends disqualification

ECP restores Murad Saeed’s Senate membership, suspends disqualification

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday reinstated Murad Saeed’s Senate membership, suspending his disqualification and subsequent notification of de-notification from the upper house.

The development came during the hearing of a petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Member of Provincial Assembly Jalal Khan regarding the general seat of the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the proceedings, the petitioner argued that a lawmaker who has not taken the oath of office cannot be disqualified under the Constitution or relevant legal provisions. He said that the decision to disqualify Murad Saeed was legally wrong and sought the intervention of the commission.

Accepting the preliminary arguments, the ECP suspended its earlier orders regarding Murad Saeed’s disqualification, effectively reinstating his Senate membership till the final decision.

The petitioner also requested the commission to suspend the schedule for the by-election for the vacant Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which had fallen vacant following the earlier disqualification of Murad Saeed.
