Elephant Sonia passes away in Karachi’s Safari park

Elephant Sonia passes away in Karachi’s Safari park

KARACHI: In a tragic incident, Sonia one of the three elephants in the Karachi Safari Park lost the battle of life early morning. Sonia was a famous African elephant and has been the center of tourist attention when visiting the park.

Before her untimely death, Sonia was eating normally and was in good health, according to park officials.

According to the administration, early in the morning, park employees found Sonia’s lifeless body with no potential signs of any harm. To determine Sonia’s cause of death, a post-mortem examination will be performed.

Sonia came to the Karachi Safari Park along with a pack of three other African elephants, Madhubala, Noor Jehan, and Malika, who came to Pakistan in 2009 after they were caught in the wild at a young age. Arriving in Karachi, they were separated, Madhubala and Noor Jehan were brought to Karachi Zoo, and their sisters, Sonia and Malika, came to Karachi Safari Park.

In November 2021, the Sindh High Court in Pakistan asked FOUR PAWS to assess the well-being of the four elephants. They were all found in need of proper diet, enrichment, and medical treatment. Noor Jehan and Madhubala also needed dental surgery due to infections caused by broken tusks. Following the death of Noor Jehan, Madhubala was Pakistan’s last captive African elephant in a zoo.
