Govt finalize mechanism for targeted petrol subsidy

Govt finalize mechanism for targeted petrol subsidy

ISLAMABAD: The government has finalised a mechanism to provide targeted petrol subsidies directly to citizens, aiming to ensure transparent and efficient distribution of relief.

According to officials from the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, no mobile application will be required and there will be no rationing of petrol under the scheme. Instead, data is being collected from Excise and Taxation departments to identify eligible beneficiaries.

The officials said subsidy payments will be transferred directly to citizens’ bank accounts against their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs), with payment data being shared with the State Bank of Pakistan for processing.

They added that digital wallets have already started disbursing payments, marking the initial phase of implementation. The initiative follows directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to adopt a unified policy across all provinces.

Under the plan, provinces will independently manage subsidies related to motorcycles and farmers, while measures for the transport sector—including trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles—will be handled at the national level.

Officials further stated that similar arrangements will be implemented for Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir as part of a coordinated national strategy.
