IHC asks govt over military trial of Imran Khan

Incarcerated Imran Khan allowed to speak with sons

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought clarification from the Attorney General’s Office on the possible military trial of PTI founder Imran Khan with the aim of preventing the possible military detention and trial of the former prime minister.

Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb inquired that the court also summoned Assistant Attorney General Azmat Bashir Tarar to address these concerns about the possibility of a military trial against the Imran Khan who faced charges related to the riots on May 9.

The Justice emphasized that the Attorney General’s Office needs to provide a clear explanation to the court.

Imran Khan‘s lawyer expressed concern over the possibility of a military trial in the context of the current detentions. Justice Aurangzeb allowed Bhandari to quote statements from senior government and military figures.

The court adjourned the hearing pending further clarification from the Attorney General’s Office.

The court’s registrar’s office granted Khan’s request to stay any military custody and trial and scheduled him for hearing with some objections.

In his plea, the former prime minister highlighted reports that he may be transferred to military custody in connection with the May 9 incidents. In clear words, the politician also asked the court to ensure that it remains under civil jurisdiction and prevent any military detention.

Despite being behind bars for more than a year, Imran Khan remains an important figure in Pakistani politics. He was not allowed to run in February’s general election, but his party continues to dominate the political landscape.
