Inquiry uncovers massive misappropriation in Zakat fund, FIA to investigate

FCC announces 50% increase in employees’ allowances

ISLAMABAD: An inquiry committee has uncovered massive financial irregularities in the Zakat fund, revealing misappropriation of crores of rupees. The findings have led to recommendations for strict action against officials involved in corruption.

The committee, formed in October 2024, investigated allegations of embezzlement by district administration officials and the chairman of the local Zakat committee. After the initial assessment confirmed suspicious transactions, the case was referred to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for further investigation.

The reports of mismanagement also included the alleged formation of 185 illegal local Zakat committees. The inquiry report, which has now been sent to the interior ministry, has urged the FIA to conduct a thorough investigation and initiate criminal proceedings against those involved.

It also proposed to suspend the existing Zakat and Ushr Committee, appoint an administrator and hold elections within six months, barring the current office bearers from contesting elections.

Additional recommendations included forensic audit of fake checks, special audit to determine the extent of misuse, and verification of beneficiaries through biometric records.

The report also directed the reorganization of the district zakat office, ensuring adequate staffing, and an audit officer to review the funds allocated to hospitals and institutions within two months.
