LAHORE: In a recent development, the Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, announced that two giraffes have been brought to Lahore Safari Park from South Africa.
The arrival brings an eight-year giraffe absence from Lahore’s public enclosures to an end and brings life back to an erstwhile barren giraffe enclosure in the city zoo.
Three years back, a male giraffe had passed away, leaving behind its female counterpart alone, officials added, and the new couple will enable the public to see the species in Lahore again.
Authorities added that the relocation comes as a result of the removal of a two-year import ban on animals that had been put in place due to fears regarding zoo conditions.
Authorities attributed about 18 months of reforms in the management of the province’s wildlife and zoos to comply with international standards and regain global confidence to restart such transfers.
