Pakistan bans sugary products, drinks to prevent diabetes

The caretaker federal Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, banned the use of sugary foods, in a step praised as ground-breaking in promoting public health.

The Federal Ministry of Health issued an official advisory, directing that sweet products be prohibited from use in official meetings or functions. The Minister of Health noted that sugar-filled beverages contribute to both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The decision demonstrates the government’s resolve to reduce the number of diseases, both communicable and non-communicable, associated with accessive intake of sugary products.

The acting health minister, Dr. Nadeem Jan underlined the preventive nature of the prohibition and stressed the need to create a healthy atmosphere to reduce the risk of illness. He claimed that both communicable and non-communicable diseases were being effectively prevented by the government.

According to Dr. Jan, his government has quickly improved the health sector through extensive changes.
