NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court has been rocked by a row after a lawyer allegedly hurled a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai.
The incident follows Justice Gavai’s recent remarks about the Hindu god Vishnu.
According to media reports, Justice Gavai had said during a hearing in a case in which a petitioner had sought to replace a damaged idol of Vishnu, “Go and tell the deity to do something,” after which the court dismissed the petition.
On Monday, a lawyer suddenly walked up to the elevated platform in front of the judges in the court and tried to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice.
While being arrested, the lawyer shouted slogans that “we will not tolerate disrespect for Sanatan Dharma.
” Chief Justice BR Gavai directed that the court proceedings continue despite the incident.
Last month, Justice Gavai clarified that his remarks had been misrepresented and stated that he respects all religions.
The Supreme Court Lawyers’ Association strongly condemned the incident and demanded action against the lawyer involved.
