ISLAMABAD: High-level talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad ended without any agreement, as both sides failed to resolve three major points of contention. The negotiations, described as historic, were aimed at easing tensions but instead exposed deep divisions.
According to sources, disagreements over uranium enrichment, the handling of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, and control of the Strait of Hormuz led to a complete deadlock.
1. Dispute Over Uranium Enrichment Intensifies
The biggest hurdle emerged when the US delegation demanded that Iran reduce its uranium enrichment to zero percent. Iran firmly rejected the proposal, arguing that as a sovereign nation, it has the right to maintain uranium enrichment up to 3.67% for peaceful nuclear energy purposes.
Iranian officials stressed that abandoning enrichment entirely would undermine their civil nuclear program.
2. Clash Over Enriched Uranium Stockpile
Another major sticking point was the US demand that Iran hand over its approximately 440 kilograms of enriched uranium. In return, Washington reportedly offered to ease sanctions and release frozen assets.
However, Iran refused to transfer its uranium under US control, stating it would manage or dispose of the material independently rather than surrender it.
3. Strait of Hormuz Control Sparks Tensions
The third and most critical disagreement centered on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route. The United States proposed placing the waterway under a joint international task force.
Iran strongly opposed the idea, viewing control over the strait as a key strategic asset and a critical component of its national defense.
Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts Fall Short
Pakistan reportedly attempted to mediate by suggesting a joint control mechanism to break the impasse. However, Iran remained unwilling to compromise, considering any concession over the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic loss.
Talks End Without Agreement
With no consensus on the three major issues, the talks concluded without a deal. US Vice President JD Vance is expected to return after presenting Washington’s final position.
Analysts warn that the failure of these negotiations could further escalate regional tensions and impact global economic stability.
