Electricity prices likely to drop in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet approved the hike of Rs5.72 per unit in the basic electricity tariff on Thursday.

According to Power Division sources, the federal cabinet approved the increase through a circulation summary.

Sources said that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had sent the summary to increase the basic electricity tariff by Rs 5.72 per unit to the government.

The decision will be sent to the Nepra for uniform tariff implementation, sources said. The increase in the basic power tariff was made for the Fiscal Year 2024-25 and will take effect from July 1, 2024.

The average basic power tariff has been increased from Rs.29.78 to Rs.35.50 per unit.  The decision of the federal cabinet will be sent to NEPRA for uniform tariff implementation.

Upon the regulatory authority’s approval, the federal government will issue a necessary tariff hike notification.

Sources said that the Shehbaz-led government is required to hike tariffs by July 10 as part of the IMF’s conditions. The increase in the basic tariff of electricity will have an additional burden of about 600 billion rupees on the power consumers.
