Punjab govt announces thousands of school teacher jobs

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced plans to recruit 30,000 visiting government school teachers during the next two months to meet the shortage of teaching staff.

Punjab School Education Minister Sikandar Hayat stated that as many as 30,000 teachers for government schools will be hired across the province in several phases to address the prevailing shortage of teachers effectively.

According to the details, the School Education Department is facing a shortage of 115,000 teachers in the province. The major recruitment of schoolteachers was last made in 2018 during the PML-N government and around 400 to 500 appointments were made during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) tenure only in two districts of Murree and Mianwali.

Punjab Education Department said the current government was trying to hire 30,000 school teachers on a visiting basis and they would be given salaries per lecture.

“Depending on the need, we plan to hire 20,000 to 30,000 teachers during the summer holidays, ensuring schools are well-staffed for the upcoming academic year,” the education minister said.

Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaqat told a local publication that the government should start recruitment in the school department and should appoint teachers permanently to meet the shortage.

He said there was around 115,000 schoolteachers shortage in the province and it could only be addressed by recruiting teachers on a permanent basis.
