Govt announces over 1000 new jobs for unemployed citizens

LAHORE: The government has announced plans to hire more than 1,000 officials in Pakistan Railways to consolidate internal management, passenger safety, and asset security.

81 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and 914 constables will be employed in the first phase. The candidates for ASI are required to have an intermediate level of education, and constables need a matriculation degree.

Women and minority communities have been reserved seats to promote gender equality and equal opportunity in both jobs.

The recruitment process will be held openly on merit, consisting of written tests, physical tests, and interviews. Official notices will shortly be published in the national dailies and government websites.

Pakistan Railways has indicated signs of financial revival, recording profit during the current fiscal year after recording losses in the past years, as per a Ministry of Railways report.

The three-year loss of the railway from 2022–23 to 2024–25 was cumulative at Rs. 6 billion, according to the report. The 2022–23 fiscal year had revenue of Rs. 63.718 billion and expenditure of Rs. 72.178 billion, resulting in a deficit of Rs. 8.460 billion. Revenues in 2023–24 were higher at Rs. 88.792 billion, slightly more than expenses at Rs. 88.380 billion, leaving a surplus of Rs. 410 million.

For the fiscal year 2024–25, Pakistan Railways has posted revenues of Rs. 93.382 billion over expenditures of Rs. 91.120 billion, making a profit of Rs. 2.262 billion.
